Police Officer Suspended After Video of Man Being Kicked and Stamped on Head at Manchester Airport Circulates

A police officer has been suspended following the circulation of a video showing a man being kicked and stamped on the head at Manchester Airport. Greater Manchester Police confirmed the officer’s suspension after a “thorough review of further information” regarding the incident that occurred on Tuesday.

The footage shows a uniformed officer holding a Taser over a man lying on the ground at Terminal 2 before striking him twice. The incident has sparked significant public outcry and led to a protest outside Rochdale police station.

Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham has called for calm following the protest, where hundreds of people gathered on Wednesday night, chanting “shame on you.”

Greater Manchester Police acknowledged the “deep concerns” raised by the public. According to a police spokesman, the incident began when firearms officers were punched to the ground while attempting to make an arrest following a fight at the airport. There was a “clear risk” that their weapons could be taken, and all three officers were taken to the hospital, with one suffering a broken nose.

Four men were arrested on suspicion of assault and affray.

Mr. Burnham described the video as “very disturbing” and supported the officer’s suspension as the “right action.” However, he noted that after viewing the “full footage,” it was clear the situation was “fast-moving and complicated” in a challenging location.

“Time has been taken to get a clearer picture of what happened,” he said, emphasizing the need for a thorough and measured investigation to proceed.
