Phrank Shaibu Critiques Tinubu’s Vacation Amid Economic Crisis

Phrank Shaibu, Special Assistant on Public Communication to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has openly criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s two-week vacation in France, describing it as ill-timed and insensitive given Nigeria’s current economic crisis. The announcement of Tinubu’s leave has sparked public debate, particularly as the nation faces deepening economic challenges.

In response to comments made by Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Shaibu argued that holding public office necessitates continuous accountability, even during personal breaks. Onanuga had urged the public to respect the President’s “private time,” stating, “President Tinubu is on leave for two weeks… he is still observing his leave.” He emphasized that Nigerians should not be concerned about Tinubu’s whereabouts, asserting that the President is free to travel wherever he pleases during his time off.

However, Shaibu countered this view, expressing his frustration on his X (formerly Twitter) account. He claimed Onanuga’s comments reflected a “indifference” to the struggles faced by ordinary citizens. “Onanuga needs help,” Shaibu remarked, accusing Tinubu’s office of prioritizing personal comfort over public duty.

“While Nigerians grapple with fuel price hikes, inflation, insecurity, and a crumbling economy, we’re told not to worry because, well, it’s his private time,” he added sarcastically. Shaibu underscored the importance of leadership that recognizes the severity of the challenges facing the populace, stating, “Nigerians deserve leadership that matches the gravity of the challenges they face, not one that treats the presidency like a travel agency.”

This exchange has intensified ongoing discussions regarding the responsibilities and priorities of Nigeria’s leaders in the face of national hardships, underscoring calls for greater sensitivity and commitment from those in power.
