Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, emphasized that humanity surpasses politics during his visit to Benin, Edo State, on Wednesday.
Obi, former governor of Anambra State, was in Benin to support the verification of nursing graduates by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria.
Obi visited St. Philomena Midwifery and Nursing School in Benin, where he stressed that his visit was motivated by humanitarian concerns rather than political ambitions. He stated, “I am not here for politics. Humanity is bigger than politics, and that is why I am here today. My commitment to humanitarian causes predates my tenure as governor.”
As part of his support, Obi donated N10 million to the school, aiming to bolster the health sector. He advocated for increased government investment in health, education, and human capital development as key drivers for economic improvement.
“Development hinges on three critical areas: health, education, and poverty alleviation,” Obi said. “Investing in these areas leads to progress. Developed countries focus on these aspects, and Nigeria must follow suit to advance.”
He also highlighted the importance of ensuring that Nigerian nursing graduates receive proper authorization to work globally. Obi argued that addressing the brain drain in the health sector requires significant investment in training and employment opportunities for healthcare professionals.
Obi revealed that he has supported 18 facilities with financial contributions and emphasized that collective efforts are necessary to address the country’s challenges.
