On Friday, police revealed that Pete Hegseth, Donald Trump’s nominee for defense secretary, was investigated for an alleged sexual assault in California in 2017. Hegseth, a Fox News host and military veteran who served in Afghanistan and Iraq, was never arrested and denies any wrongdoing.
Trump spokesperson Steven Cheung defended Hegseth, stating, “Mr. Hegseth has vigorously denied any and all accusations, and no charges were filed.”
Separately, CBS reported that Hegseth had once been flagged as a potential “insider threat” by fellow military personnel due to a tattoo perceived as linked to white supremacy. Hegseth has denied any association with extremist groups.
The tattoo in question, located on Hegseth’s bicep, features the Latin phrase “Deus Vult” (“God wills it”), a rallying cry used during the medieval Christian Crusades. Retired Master Sgt. DeRicko Gaither told CBS, “I looked it up, and that tattoo had ties to extremist groups,” prompting him to report the matter to leadership during Hegseth’s military service in the Minnesota National Guard.
