PDP to Sanction Members Fueling Crisis, Sets Reform Agenda Ahead of 2027

The Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ambassador Umar Damagum, has issued a strong warning to members inciting internal crises, stating that such actions could attract sanctions, including expulsion from the party.

Speaking at the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on Tuesday in Abuja, Damagum emphasized the PDP’s resolve to restore internal cohesion and reposition the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“The beauty of the PDP is that it has always had an internal mechanism to surmount whatever obstacle. They will put up obstacles, and we will surmount them until we show them the way out,” Damagum said.

He noted that despite recent defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the PDP remains committed to unity and discipline, warning that disruptive elements will no longer be tolerated.

The NEC, which last convened in April 2024, is the party’s highest decision-making body and includes governors, former presidents, national assembly members, and founding stakeholders. Damagum assured that the NEC will now meet more regularly, with three additional meetings scheduled before the party’s national convention later this year.

Also speaking at the meeting, Senator Adolphus Wabara, Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT), underscored the importance of party unity and urged leaders to put aside personal grievances for the collective interest of the party.

“No ambition, grievance, or misunderstanding should ever be allowed to override the collective interests of our party,” Wabara said.

He called for the strengthening of internal democracy, strategic communication, and the development of a people-focused agenda, noting that Nigerians are seeking leadership that is responsive and credible.

“The ordinary Nigerian is tired of hardship, insecurity, and unfulfilled promises. They are looking for leadership that listens, delivers, and matters,” he added.

As the PDP moves to rebuild from within, party leaders reaffirmed their commitment to peace, reconciliation, and renewed purpose as central pillars of the party’s strategy to reclaim national relevance.
