Abdullahi Ganduje, National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has dismissed claims that the ruling party is on the brink of collapse, asserting instead that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is facing imminent extinction.
Ganduje’s comments were in response to former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, who recently predicted that the APC would soon disband and that defectors, including Ganduje, would return to the PDP.
In a statement issued on Sunday by his Chief Press Secretary, Edwin Olofu, Ganduje dismissed Lamido’s remarks as “baseless and illogical,” stating: “In fact, we will soon receive Sule Lamido because very soon he won’t have where to go. The PDP is dead.”
Ganduje emphasized that internal conflicts and leadership challenges within the PDP would lead to its eventual collapse by the end of 2025. He pointed to the growing support for the APC, with prominent political figures across Nigeria defecting to the party under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The APC leader reaffirmed his pride in heading the party, calling it the largest political party in Nigeria and sub-Saharan Africa, and stressed its commitment to internal democracy and effective governance.
He also advised Lamido to focus on resolving the internal issues within the PDP, rather than speculating about the APC’s future.
Addressing concerns about the rise of defections to the APC and the possibility of Nigeria becoming a one-party state, Ganduje remarked:
“China is one of the strongest countries in the world, and it’s a one-party system. We are not saying we are working for a one-party system, but if that is the wish of Nigerians, we cannot quarrel with that.”
