PDP Governors Hold Critical Meeting Amid Defections and Internal Strife

Governors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) convened for a crucial meeting with party leaders at the Bauchi governor’s lodge in Abuja. The gathering, organized by the Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum, Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, also saw the attendance of Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

Present at the meeting were several PDP governors, including Ademola Adeleke of Osun, Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau, Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa, Seyi Makinde of Oyo, and Peter Mbah of Enugu. Former governors such as Liyel Imoke of Cross River, Achike Udenwa of Imo, Olagunsoye Oyinlola of Osun, Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia, and Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa were also in attendance, alongside ex-governors Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom and Samuel Otom of Benue.

This meeting, marking the second public gathering of the PDP Governors Forum this year, comes amid ongoing internal tensions within the party. It is the first such gathering since Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and his cabinet defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on April 23. The party is also grappling with a power struggle between Governor Sim Fubara of Rivers State and Nyesom Wike, despite multiple mediation efforts.

The defections have heightened tensions within the PDP, with three Kebbi lawmakers—Senators Adamu Aliero (Kebbi Central), Yahaya Abdullahi (Kebbi North), and Garba Maidoki (Kebbi South)—also leaving the party. These moves have raised concerns over the potential consolidation of power within the ruling APC. While the agenda of the current PDP meeting remains undisclosed, it is expected to address the party’s internal challenges and evolving political dynamics.
