The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has formally withdrawn from all reconciliation efforts within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), accusing key stakeholders particularly Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde of breaching critical peace agreements.
In a strongly worded statement titled “PDP Crisis: My Position” released less than 48 hours before the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for Tuesday, May 27, 2025, Wike declared that he would “fight on until justice is attained,” squarely blaming Makinde as the “chief culprit” in what he described as a betrayal of consensus decisions.
The former Rivers State governor outlined several grievances that he said had rendered the reconciliation process null and void, including:
- The party’s failure to recognise Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the authentic National Secretary, despite a Supreme Court judgment.
- The refusal of the PDP’s National Legal Adviser to withdraw pending court cases involving Rivers State.
- The continued pursuit of a controversial lawsuit seeking a state of emergency.
- A general disregard for previously agreed-upon resolutions by party leaders.
“Since after the 2023 General Election, the PDP has been wantonly swinging from one part of a slippery precipice to another, owing fundamentally to dishonesty and lack of trust amongst its key stakeholders,” Wike stated.
He also accused Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah of betrayal, lamenting what he described as a “virus of dishonesty and treachery” destabilising the party.
“I made it clear to the Governor of Oyo State, HE Seyi Makinde, that he was the architect of our problems. Non-adherence to agreements reached was the bane of the party,” he added.
Wike’s withdrawal from the peace process, especially as a key member of the influential G5 group, threatens to deepen the divisions within the PDP and further derail hopes of unity ahead of the 2027 general elections. The party’s NEC meeting, however, remains on schedule with no postponement announced.
