PDP Blasts Tinubu’s Jos Visit as ‘Insensitive’

A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Tanimu Turaki has criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over his recent visit to Jos, describing it as insensitive to victims of the Plateau killings.

Tinubu had visited the Plateau State capital on Thursday to commiserate with affected families. During a brief ceremony at the Jos Airport, he offered condolences and directed the installation of 5,000 Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras across key locations to help identify perpetrators of recurring attacks.

However, reacting on Friday, the Turaki-led National Working Committee (NWC) faulted the President’s intervention, alleging that the visit came late and lacked empathy.

“The President’s insensitivity and inhumanity were on full display… His visit and words offered no succour to the victims. This is not how to lead,” the party stated.

Speaking on behalf of the faction, National Publicity Secretary Ini Ememobong described the visit as “performative and superficial.”

“We wholly condemn this performative and superficial show by the Presidency. It would have been better for President Tinubu to have stayed back in Abuja than to mount this disgraceful display,” the statement added.

The PDP faction also linked the President’s brief stop at the airport to security concerns, arguing it reflects worsening insecurity in the country. It further criticised the proposed CCTV deployment, insisting it would not address the root causes of violence.

“The announcement of 5,000 CCTV cameras is evidence of the simplistic lens through which this administration views core security challenges. It is laughable to suggest that cameras are the solution,” the party said.

The opposition group called on the federal government to adopt a broader, “whole-of-society” approach, with stronger community engagement to tackle insecurity nationwide.
