Otti Dismisses 2027 Election Buzz, Backs Tinubu’s Economic Reforms

Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has condemned early politicking for the 2027 general elections, saying those engaging in such conversations are “trying to play God.” Otti made the remarks on Sunday during a courtesy visit by former Abia State Governor and current Senator representing Abia North, Orji Uzor Kalu, and Senator Chris Adighije, a former representative of Abia Central.

According to a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Ukoha Njoku Ukoha, the senators commended Governor Otti’s performance and discussed matters of governance during the friendly visit.

Reacting to the growing discourse around 2027, Governor Otti stated, “People in 2025 are talking of 2027… you can’t even talk about 2027 because there is no guarantee that you would go beyond 2025. Who are you to begin to talk about 2027?”

He added: “Today is certain; tomorrow is a promise. Next tomorrow is gambling. Let us talk about today. When tomorrow comes, and we are lucky to be part of it, we can hold the discussion.”

Otti emphasized that governance should focus on results rather than political distractions. “Nobody is competent to talk about tomorrow except he or she wants to play God,” he said.

On national issues, the Governor reiterated his support for President Bola Tinubu, particularly commending the president’s economic reforms and bold decision to remove fuel subsidy.

“When you talk about supporting President Tinubu, the President and I are very good friends and our friendship predates party politics,” Otti said. “What Mr. President is doing has always been my position. It requires courage to remove subsidy, and I’m in support of it.”

He noted that Nigeria had behaved “irresponsibly” for years and is now going through a necessary but painful correction phase. “If we don’t lose faith, we will eventually get it right,” he affirmed.

The Governor also acknowledged the contributions of Senator Kalu during his tenure as governor, noting that his late mother had supported Kalu for the good work he did, especially in road construction. He stated that his own administration has adopted the same strategy fixing revenue-generating areas first to enable further development.

“Government is a continuum. You don’t dwell on what went wrong in the past. We hit the reset button and moved forward,” Otti said.

In his remarks, Senator Orji Kalu praised Otti for the rehabilitation of key roads in the state, especially the Umuahia-Bende-Ohafia route, which he described as a transformation from a 3-hour ordeal to a smooth, sub-1-hour drive.

“You’re my friend for life; you are my brother for life. You have done well for our State. Thank you very much,” Kalu declared.

He further appealed to Governor Otti to maintain close ties with President Tinubu, while clarifying that he wasn’t asking the Governor to leave his party.

Senator Chris Adighije also expressed his continued support for Governor Otti, describing him as a performer whose success transcends party lines. He praised both the Governor and President Tinubu for their leadership, adding that his support is rooted in the progress of Abia State, not partisan politics.
