Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has urged young Christians to actively participate in politics, stressing that meaningful national transformation cannot happen without their involvement in the electoral and policymaking processes.
Osinbajo made the call while delivering the keynote address at the 2nd Annual Daniel Taiwo Odukoya Memorial Lecture held at The Fountain of Life Church in Lagos.
He emphasized that while politics may be seen as tainted or corrupt, it remains the only legitimate route to leadership and societal reform.
“Politics has acquired a bad name, not just in Nigeria, but globally. But the truth is, there is no other way to influence a nation except by engaging in the political process,” he said.
The former vice president warned that sitting out the political process due to its perceived toxicity deprives citizens especially Christians of the opportunity to elect leaders who align with their values.
“If we are not involved in choosing leaders, shaping policy, or participating in political parties, then we forfeit our right to complain when outcomes don’t reflect our values,” he added.
Osinbajo also advised aspiring political actors to prepare thoroughly, stressing the need for knowledge, strategy, and competence.
“You must study. You must understand how things work. Read biographies. Understand healthcare, education, and economic systems especially within the African context. Passion without preparation leads nowhere,” he cautioned.
He criticized the trend of uninformed entry into politics, warning that it often results in further damage to existing systems rather than reform.
His remarks reignited discussions about youth engagement, value-driven leadership, and the urgent need for competent and ethical participation in Nigeria’s political space.
