Vice President Yemi Osinbajo will be in charge of the country’s affairs and will preside over critical meetings for a few days pending the return of the president from his routine medical checkup.
In a discussion with State House correspondents at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on Sunday, President Muhammadu Buhari revealed this.
President Muhammadu Buhari left Nigeria for London, United Kingdom, for a routine medical checkup, but did not officially hand over the administration to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.
President Buhari stated that Osinbajo, Boss Mustapha, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, and Ibrahim Gambari, his Chief of Staff, are capable of efficiently running the country in his absence.
He said: “Well, I cannot claim to be doing the work alone. The government is fully represented; the vice-president is there. Constitutionally when I’m away, he’s in charge. And the secretary to the government and then the chief of staff. So, I have no problem.”
However, President Buhari refused to disclose to reporters if he sent a letter to the National Assembly to inform them of his handover to Osinbajo as required by Section 145 (1) of the 1999 constitution.
Meanwhile, some reactions have trailed over the statements credited to President Muhammadu Buhari that Vice President Yemi Osinbajo is in charge of governance during his absence.
