The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has once again called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to order the unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), insisting that his prolonged detention undermines Nigeria’s justice system and national cohesion.
In a statement issued over the weekend in Enugu, Ezechi Chukwu, National Publicity Secretary of Ohanaeze, urged the president to demonstrate “equity, fairness, and inclusive justice” by securing Kanu’s release.
Kanu, who was arrested in Kenya in June 2021 and extradited to Nigeria under controversial circumstances, has now spent four years in detention, facing trial on charges including treasonable felony.
Ohanaeze described the ongoing detention as a moral and legal embarrassment for Nigeria.
“The question of Nnamdi Kanu’s continued detention poses a moral burden on the corporate integrity of the Nigerian judicial system,” the group stated. “The world is watching to see how long the authorities will delay justice.”
The apex Igbo body argued that the manner of Kanu’s arrest and extradition breached international legal protocols, making the foundation of his trial highly questionable.
“Since his process of extradition from Kenya is unlawful and the basis for his arraignment is shaky, one wonders why Kanu remains in detention without justice after four years,” the statement added.
Ohanaeze emphasized that releasing Kanu would be a major step toward national reconciliation, particularly in the South-East, where sentiments of political exclusion and marginalization remain strong.
“His release would mark a turning point in healing long-standing regional divides and restoring trust in the rule of law,” Chukwu said.
The group urged Tinubu to use his office to correct the injustice and prove his commitment to a united, fair, and inclusive Nigeria.
