Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has appointed two-time former world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua as the state’s Sports Ambassador. The announcement was made during Joshua’s visit to the Government House in Abeokuta on Monday.
Governor Abiodun took to his X account to express pride in the appointment, stating, “As a gesture of our collective pride and recognition of his contributions to sports, we were delighted to present him with a letter appointing him as a Sports Ambassador for Ogun State.” He emphasized that the appointment underscores the state’s commitment to celebrating excellence and supporting individuals who bring honor to Ogun State. “Together, we look forward to Anthony Joshua achieving even greater victories and continuing to be a beacon of inspiration for Ogun State and beyond,” he added.
The governor lauded Joshua for his “remarkable achievements in the world of boxing,” which continue to inspire millions, including residents of Ogun State. He noted that Joshua’s dedication, discipline, and excellence embody the values upheld by the state.
During the special courtesy visit, Joshua was accompanied by his family. Governor Abiodun remarked that the visit highlighted the strong bond shared between the people of Ogun State and their collective pride in Joshua’s success. “We remain committed to supporting our talents and creating an environment that nurtures greatness in all spheres of life,” the governor said.
In addition to the appointment, Governor Abiodun announced plans to construct a new indoor boxing ring named after Joshua. The 35-year-old champion is also set to light the torch for the Gateway Games National Sports Festival, which has been rescheduled for May next year.
