Norway’s King Harald has been discharged from a hospital in Malaysia after undergoing the installation of a pacemaker during his holiday illness.
Continuing his recovery, the 87-year-old monarch will return to a Norwegian hospital, according to a statement from the royal palace. During his two-week sick leave, Crown Prince Haakon will act as regent, assuming the King’s constitutional duties.
As the oldest reigning monarch in Europe, King Harald ascended to the throne on 17 January 1991. His hospitalization resulted from an infection contracted during a private trip to the resort island of Langkawi. On Saturday, the royal palace announced the fitting of a temporary pacemaker due to a low heart rate. The king’s physician emphasized that the pacemaker would enhance the safety of his return home. King Harald is scheduled to fly back on a medical evacuation plane.
