The 19 Northern State Governors’ Forum, chaired by Governor Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe state, has strongly condemned the audacious attacks on communities in Plateau state, which have resulted in over 100 casualties.
The attacks, characterized by arson, looting, and destruction, occurred on Sunday night, leaving residents in distress.
Governor Yahaya, in a press statement on behalf of the Northern Governors, expressed deep concern over the loss of lives and property during these attacks, particularly at a time when residents were preparing for the festive season.
Describing such violence as cowardly and contrary to the spirit of unity, he urged a renewed commitment to peace and coexistence.
The statement commended Governor Caleb Muftwang of Plateau State for providing necessary leadership in the aftermath of the attacks. Governor Inuwa also praised the security operatives for their prompt response and called for swift action to bring the attackers and their masterminds to justice.
“It is reprehensible and disheartening to hear of the loss of over 100 lives and destruction of properties that occurred during these attacks, especially during a time when residents were preparing to celebrate the festive season.
“Such acts of violence are not only cowardly but also run counter to the spirit of unity and coexistence that our region upholds.
“We must all prioritize peace and harmonious living in our communities. Now, more than ever, we must reaffirm our commitment to peaceful coexistence and solidarity regardless of our differences.”, he said.
Plateau, known for its ethnic and religious diversity, has been marred by inter-communal conflicts, often framed as ethno-religious clashes between Muslim herders and predominantly Christian farmers.
The Northern Governors emphasized the imperative of prioritizing peace and harmonious living in communities, urging solidarity despite differences.
