North-East Governors Partner Almajiri Commission to Boost Formal Education

Governors of the North-East states—Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Taraba, and Yobe—have pledged to collaborate with the National Commission for Almajiri and Out-of-School Children Education (NCAOOSCE), committing to provide office space for the commission in each state.

The resolution was part of a communique read by Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas at the conclusion of the North-East Governors’ Forum meeting held Thursday in Damaturu, Yobe State.

The forum expressed determination to support the enrolment of Almajiri and out-of-school children into formal education while offering vocational and technical training to comprehensively address the challenge. “Forum resolved to work closely with the National Commission for Almajiri and Out-of-School Children Education (NCAOOSCE) by providing office space in each state, supporting enrolment, offering vocational and technical education, and developing a unified approach to addressing the menace in the sub-region,” the communique noted.

Raising concerns over renewed insurgent activities, the governors urged the Armed Forces, security agencies, and community leaders to reassess their strategies, stressing that counterinsurgency requires more than kinetic efforts. “Forum notes that addressing the security challenge in the Northeast requires a multidimensional approach—not only kinetic strategies but also tackling root causes such as youth unemployment, poor infrastructure, lack of education, and poverty,” the statement said.

The forum also highlighted the importance of the Nigerian Law School Yola Campus and pledged to support its expansion through additional hostel accommodation, improved water supply, and other critical facilities to enhance learning conditions.

While commending the Federal Government and the military for their efforts in combating Boko Haram, the governors reaffirmed their commitment to tackling shared challenges and deepening regional security, social, and economic integration.
