The Federal Ministry of Education has announced that Nigeria’s new basic education curriculum will be implemented starting January 2025, with the senior secondary education curriculum to follow in September 2025. This announcement was made by the Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, during a stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja on Monday.
Professor Mamman noted that the curriculum is designed to tackle key issues such as learning crises and employability, equipping students with essential 21st-century skills. He emphasized that the next three months will be dedicated to preparing teachers’ guides and finalizing the curriculum rollout.
Dr. Garba Gandu, Director of Curriculum at the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC), added that the curriculum aims to enhance global competitiveness through skill acquisition. It introduces fifteen new trade subjects, including digital literacy, information technology, and vocational skills such as plumbing and tiling. Entrepreneurship subjects, including building, construction, garment making, hospitality services, hairstyling, GSM repairs, and CCTV installation and maintenance, are also included.
The new curriculum places a strong emphasis on practical skills, ensuring that Nigerian students are better prepared for the workforce and entrepreneurial opportunities in the future.
