Nigerian residents in India have raised concerns over what they describe as rising cases of harassment, discrimination, and strict immigration enforcement, calling for urgent attention from authorities.
Several individuals, including students, claim they have faced difficulties ranging from visa renewal challenges to alleged profiling by law enforcement. Many say the situation has worsened in recent months, with reports of arrests, intimidation, and, in some cases, physical confrontations.
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has already taken action by staging a protest at the Indian High Commission in Abuja, urging the Federal Government to step in diplomatically. The group warned it could escalate its campaign if no concrete response is received.
Students based in cities like Mumbai and Delhi say frequent visa renewals and high fees have added financial pressure. Some allege they are required to pay significantly more than other foreign nationals, while also facing stricter conditions tied to their stay.
There are also claims that Nigerians are often singled out during law enforcement operations, particularly those with expired documentation, leading to detentions and deportations. Some affected individuals say they only became aware of certain visa conditions after arriving in the country.
Analysts point to a rise in arrests linked to drug-related offences involving foreign nationals as one factor influencing increased scrutiny. However, community members argue that the actions of a few individuals should not define the treatment of the broader Nigerian population.
Officials from the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) said they have not received widespread formal complaints, noting that immigration policies remain the responsibility of the host country. They added that Nigeria’s role is largely limited to diplomatic engagement and possible reciprocity measures.
Former diplomats have urged calm while calling for proactive dialogue between both nations. They emphasised the need for Nigerian authorities to engage their counterparts in India to ensure fair treatment of citizens, while also encouraging Nigerians abroad to comply with local laws.
The situation continues to spark debate, with growing calls for balanced action that protects Nigerians overseas while maintaining respect for international regulations.
