Augustine Eguavoen, the Super Eagles’ interim coach, announced on Friday that Chidozie Awaziem had not healed from an ankle injury.
On Friday, the Super Eagles had their final training session before their match against Sudan at the Roumdé Adjia Stadium’s practice pitch in Garoua.
While fielding questions from reporters, Eguavoen clarified that Awaziem was suffering from an ankle injury and would miss Saturday’s match against the Falcons of Jediane at Roumdé Adjia Stadium in Garoua.
Alanyaspor’s central defender hasn’t been seen in public since the Super’s final warm-up before their match against Egypt.
He also missed the team’s last two training sessions, leading to speculation that he had tested positive for COVID-19 in certain quarters.
Eguavoen expressed the hope that Awaziem would join his teammates in training.
“Hopefully soon, that is beyond my control. I think if the medical staff were here now they will certify him fit to be back on the pitch.
“Awaziem is still down, he has an ankle injury as I know and he is going to be back very, very soon,” he said.
The former Porto star was not at the stadium during Nigeria’s opening game against Egypt on Tuesday, Jan. 11, and was also not part of the team’s training session on Friday.
Meanwhile, Kenneth Omeruo, the central defender for CD Leganes, has been cleared to face the Sudanese.
Following his injury-forced substitute in the last minutes of the play against Egypt, he fully participated in the training session.
On Saturday at 5.00 p.m., the Super Eagles, who are on three points, will face Sudan, who are on one point.
Egypt, who are presently bottom of Group D with nil points, will play Guinea Bissau at 8 p. m. with the hopes of redeeming themselves.
