Nigeria Loses N217.79bn Since Twitter Ban

Twitter ban
The Twitter ban in Nigeria has reached out to 100 days, and in that period, the country has lost N217.79bn
The Federal Government had on June 4 suspended Twitter after the social-based media platform erased a tweet by the President, Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.).
Therefore, telcos on June 5 hindered admittance to Twitter in the wake of getting a mandate by the Nigerian Communications Commission.
On this, the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria had said, “We, The Association of Licensed Telecommunication Operators of Nigeria wish to affirm that our individuals have gotten formal guidelines from the Nigerian Communications Commission, the business controller, to suspend admittance to Twitter.
“ALTON has conducted a robust assessment of the directive following internationally accepted principles.”
As per the NetBlocks Cost of Shutdown Tool, the blockade costs Nigeria’s economy N90,712,044 ($250,600) every hour.
It has been 2,400 hours since the FG restricted Twitter.
As of late, the Presidency through the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said it was near a concurrence with Twitter and would before long lift the ban.
Nigeria is a member of an elite rundown of countries, for example, China, Iran, and North Korea where Twitter is restricted. Since the ban, the utilization of Virtual Private Networks has risen.
A firm had said that it recorded an increment of more than 200% in web traffic from Nigeria since the Federal Government restricted microblogging sites.
