Nigeria Heightens Surveillance on Passengers from China Over New Virus Outbreak

The Federal Government of Nigeria has intensified monitoring of passengers arriving from China following the emergence of a new respiratory virus, Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), which is raising significant concern in the Asian nation.

Reports indicate that northern China is grappling with a surge in HMPV cases, particularly among children, resulting in overcrowded hospitals and fears of a potential health crisis. Viral videos on social media have shown packed medical facilities, further fueling public anxiety.

HMPV typically causes symptoms such as cough, fever, nasal congestion, and shortness of breath. The rise in infections among children under 14 in China has been notable, though neighboring regions like Cambodia, Taiwan, and Hong Kong have only reported isolated cases without major outbreaks.

In response, Nigeria’s Center for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has announced enhanced surveillance protocols. Dr. John Oladejo, speaking on behalf of the NCDC, revealed that the country might implement quarantine measures for travellers arriving from China as a precautionary step.

Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) is monitoring the situation closely and has advised affected regions to prioritize vaccination, maintain hygiene, and improve ventilation in public areas.

This comes as China struggles to manage the virus’s spread five years after the onset of COVID-19. While HMPV is less severe than COVID-19, it poses risks of complications such as bronchitis or pneumonia, particularly for vulnerable groups.
