The long-awaited and much-discussed 2023 general elections in Nigeria took place on Saturday February 25, 2023, Nigerians were able to vote their preferred candidates especially for the well contested seat in Aso Rock.
The 2023 general election came at a time when Nigerians were going through series of hardship like new naira notes, fuel scarcity and insecurity ravaging the country.
Ahead of the general elections, INEC promised Nigerians that it would be completely unbiased and that the election would be held on the scheduled date,February 25th, 2023, and also encouraged citizens to go out and vote without fear or discrimination.
In the spirit of exercising their civil rights, Nigerians in different parts of the country came out with the zeal to elect a leader that would change the course of the nation among the Presidential Candidates,Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso of the New Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP) among others.
These are some of the reactions gotten from various voters in different parts of the country on how the election process went in their Ward.
Mr. James, a voter at Ward 7 in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State, questioned the decision of INEC in printing just the logo of the Labour Party (LP) with the motto instead of adding their initials LP to it to help people identify the party easily. He said that’s not a mistake but a deliberate action from INEC.
Mr. Paul, who also voted in Ward 7 in Abeokuta, said “the process of the elections was smooth as INEC officials provided the necessary information to voters and party agents.” He also said that voters followed the laid-down rules to ensure a free and fair election.
“My accreditation at Ward 7 was smooth,” he said.
Meanwhile, in other parts of the state, Mrs. Ajoke complained that in some polling units, INEC officials were late and the voting materials were not available.
The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who cast his vote at Eyekole Ward in Lagos Highland, said the vote was peaceful and the accreditation went very well.
Meanwhile in Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello said he experienced a little hitch in the functionality of the BVAS while trying to cast his vote in the early hours of the day.
Also, Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike wouldn’t hold back his discomfort when interviewed said “ I’m highly disappointed with the INEC over the BVAS” after experiencing difficulty in being accredited.
Meanwhile in Ubima, Rivers State, the country home of Rotimi Amaechi Ward 8, Unit 18 at the time of filing this report, materials were yet to arrive and no INEC Officials on ground.
Though the election appears to be peaceful in Cross River, Governor Ayade expressed his worry over the delay in the arrival of voting materials in his hometown as voters may be disenfranchised.
Residents in Yenagoa showed anger over the absence of electoral materials, voting was disrupted in the Elegushi area of Lagos State earlier in the day.
Law enforcement officers swung into action in some places to eliminate any form of threats while voters cast their votes and observe the vote counts as we all await the announcement of results and successful upload of the result.
