Niger State to Eject Unqualified Teachers, Screen PTA Recruits

The Niger State Government has announced plans to remove unqualified teachers from classrooms to enhance the quality of education across the state.

Speaking at the Annual General Meeting of the Bida Old Students Association (BOSA) on Saturday in Minna, the state’s Commissioner for Basic Education, Dr. Hadiza Asabe Mohammed, revealed that rigorous screening is underway to identify and retain only competent teachers.

Dr. Mohammed emphasized the importance of thorough vetting, stating, “The state will not tolerate unqualified individuals in teaching roles. Teachers who cannot meet training requirements will be removed to ensure children receive quality education.”

She noted that teachers recruited by the Parents Teachers Association (PTA) would be retained after screening, while the National Career Path Policy would be reinstated to provide clear growth opportunities for teachers within the profession.

Additionally, the state government directed retired teachers still occupying staff quarters in schools to vacate and make way for newly recruited educators.

In his remarks, the National President of BOSA, Major General Abdulmalik Halidu Giwa, highlighted the ongoing infrastructural challenges at Government College, Bida, despite contributions from alumni. The Chairman of the Organizing Committee, Alhaji Muhammadu Agwai, called for increased support to address the college’s deteriorating state.

The event also featured awards recognizing the achievements of notable alumni, including former military Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, and former military Governor of Kano State, Colonel Sani Bello, among others.
