The Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, has urged the Nigerian Institute for Public Relations (NIPR) to spearhead strategies for tackling fake news and misinformation in Nigeria.
Speaking at the induction ceremony for 421 new NIPR members in Abuja on Thursday, Idris, represented by the Director of Public Relations and Protocol in the ministry, Suleiman Haruna, commended the institute’s significant contributions to improving information management in the country. He reassured the NIPR of the government’s continued support in promoting professionalism.
Idris expressed concern over the misuse of digital platforms by some individuals to spread disinformation, highlighting the critical role of public relations professionals in countering this trend.
“We operate in a dynamic environment where the speed and scale of information dissemination present both challenges and opportunities,” he stated. “As professionals, you are tasked with ensuring that truth prevails over falsehood and facts triumph over fiction. Your work reflects not just your organization but the entire nation.”
The minister also urged the newly inducted members to uphold NIPR’s values of integrity, truth, and excellence, using their platforms to promote unity and positively represent Nigeria globally.
In his remarks, NIPR National President, Dr. Ike Neliaku, warned government entities against employing uncertified public relations professionals in communication roles, stressing that the institute would no longer tolerate unqualified practitioners.
“According to the law, individuals practicing public relations without NIPR certification are quacks and risk prosecution. Conviction carries fines, imprisonment, or both, which come with a lasting stigma,” Neliaku cautioned.
He added that the institute continues to advocate for professionalism and encouraged uncertified practitioners to regularize their status.
One of the highlights of the event was the induction of Mrs. Emmanuel Arukwe, pioneer Managing Director of NNPC Foundation Limited, as an honorary fellow of the institute.
