The Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Ibadan Branch, Ibrahim Lawal, has called on Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, to reconsider his approach to governance, citing multiple infractions.
Lawal’s statement follows allegations of gross misconduct leveled against Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, by 27 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule.
Speaking with The Guardian on Monday, Lawal criticized the governor’s leadership style, particularly his handling of political relationships and governance. He condemned the demolition of the state’s House of Assembly complex, describing it as an act of high-handedness that has disrupted governance.
“Governor Sim Fubara should retrace his steps. The Supreme Court’s decision and its description of his actions show that governance has collapsed in Rivers State due to his high-handedness. He caused this trouble for himself. What is the basis for fighting the legislature in the first place? The legislature is the symbol of any democratic government. Destroying their chambers was unnecessary and unfair,” Lawal stated.
He also faulted Fubara for mismanaging political relationships, particularly his fallout with his political mentor and key allies who helped him attain office.
“Why did he have to fight his mentor? How long has he been in politics that he is already at odds with those who brought him to power? What does he stand to gain from this? We have seen governors who effectively manage people, but Fubara lacks that ability,” he added.
Lawal further urged the lawmakers to act with statesmanship and prioritize the interests of the people.
“I congratulate the 27 lawmakers for escaping the hammer. However, they should be statesmanlike in their approach. I do not think the House should adjourn sine die (indefinitely) at this time,” he concluded.
