Several people were killed and multiple others injured after a vehicle plowed into a crowd during a festival in Vancouver, Canada, police confirmed late Saturday.
In a statement posted on X, Vancouver Police said, “A number of people have been killed and multiple others are injured after a driver drove into a crowd at a street festival at E. 41st Avenue and Fraser shortly after 8 p.m. tonight. The driver is in custody. We will provide more information as the investigation unfolds.”
The tragedy occurred around 8:00 p.m. local time during the Lapu Lapu Day festival, one of the largest annual gatherings for Vancouver’s Filipino community.
Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim called the incident “horrific” and expressed his condolences. “Our thoughts are with all those affected and with Vancouver’s Filipino community,” he said, noting that police had confirmed multiple fatalities and injuries.
Authorities have pledged to release additional details as the investigation progresses.
