A Minnesota state representative and her husband were shot and killed early Saturday by a masked gunman posing as a police officer, in what Governor Tim Walz has condemned as an “act of targeted political violence.”
The victim, Democratic State Rep. Melissa Hortman—former Speaker of the Minnesota House—and her husband, Mark, were gunned down at their home. Authorities believe the attack was a politically motivated assassination. “She was a formidable public servant,” said an emotional Gov. Walz during a news conference. “She is irreplaceable.”
Just prior to that shooting, Democratic State Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were both shot multiple times at their residence. They were undergoing emergency surgery Saturday morning. “We’re cautiously optimistic they will survive this assassination attempt,” Walz said.
The suspected shooter, 57-year-old Vance Luther Boelter, remained at large as of Saturday afternoon. Authorities say he was disguised in a realistic latex mask and impersonated law enforcement during the attacks. Police also confirmed that Boelter carried a list containing the names of dozens of Minnesota Democratic officials.
Boelter is believed to have some prior connection to Hoffman, having served alongside him on a state workforce development board. He is also listed as a leader at Praetorian Guard Security Services, a private security firm based in the Twin Cities. According to an online biography, Boelter has a background in military and security training.
Investigators continue to probe the motive behind the shootings and whether Boelter had direct personal relationships with the victims. A statewide manhunt is underway, and authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any sightings or information.
