Tens of thousands of women in West Bengal marched on Wednesday night to protest the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at a state-run hospital in Kolkata last week. The “Reclaim the Night” march marked the climax of nearly a week of intense demonstrations sparked by the brutal killing of the 31-year-old doctor at RG Kar Medical College last Friday.
After enduring a 36-hour shift, the doctor had fallen asleep in a seminar room due to the lack of a designated rest area. The next morning, her half-naked body, bearing severe injuries, was discovered by colleagues on the podium. A hospital volunteer worker has been arrested in connection with the crime.
Responding to widespread calls on social media, women from various walks of life took to the streets across Kolkata and throughout the state on a rainy Wednesday night. While the protests were mostly peaceful, clashes erupted when a group of unidentified men stormed RG Kar Hospital, the site of the murder, and vandalized the emergency department. Police deployed tear gas to disperse the crowd, and several police vehicles were damaged.
Smaller protests also took place in other Indian cities, including Delhi, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Pune.
