Marjorie Taylor Greene Announces Surprise Resignation After Explosive Rift With Trump

Georgia Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene announced Friday that she will resign from Congress next year, formally stepping down on Jan. 5, 2026 — a stunning move that follows a bitter public split with President Donald Trump.

Greene, once one of Trump’s most loyal allies, has faced escalating attacks from the president after she criticized his administration’s handling of the Jeffrey Epstein investigation and broke with GOP leadership on several recent votes. Trump withdrew his endorsement last week and vowed to back a primary challenger.

In a four-page resignation letter posted on X, Greene directly addressed the fallout.

“Standing up for American women who were raped at 14, trafficked and used by rich powerful men should not result in me being called a traitor and threatened by the President of the United States, whom I fought for,” she wrote.

“I have too much self-respect and dignity, love my family way too much, and do not want my sweet district to endure a hateful primary,” she added, warning Republicans could lose the midterms “while we fight each other.”

Greene has represented her northwest Georgia district since 2021. Her standing with Trump cratered after she joined a bipartisan discharge petition forcing a vote to compel the Justice Department to release its full Epstein files — an issue she has championed for years.

Trump blasted Greene as a “ranting lunatic” who had “gone far left,” later mocking her as “Marjorie ‘Traitor’ Greene.”

In a video accompanying her announcement Friday, Greene said, “My self-worth is not defined by a man, but by God.”

Trump called Greene’s resignation “great news for the country” and said she did not notify him ahead of time.

“I think it’s great news for the country. It’s great,” Trump said.
