Manchester United have officially sacked head coach Ruben Amorim, less than 24 hours after a tense press conference following a 1-1 draw with Leeds United in which he publicly challenged the club’s leadership.
The decision was communicated to Amorim in person on Monday by Director of Football Jason Wilcox and CEO Omar Berrada. Under-18s coach Darren Fletcher will take temporary charge of United’s upcoming trip to Burnley on Wednesday. The club may consider an interim appointment for the remainder of the season, with a permanent managerial decision expected in the summer.
The dismissal was attributed not solely to Amorim’s strained relationship with Wilcox but also to a perceived lack of evolution or progress on the pitch under his tenure. Amorim, who was appointed in November 2024, guided United to the UEFA Europa League final in Bilbao in May. However, with the team currently sitting sixth in the Premier League, club leadership decided a change was necessary to maximize the chances of a strong league finish.
Manchester United expressed gratitude to Amorim for his contributions and wished him well in his future endeavors. Meanwhile, speculation has emerged that former United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær may be interested in returning as caretaker, although the club is still evaluating its options.
Darren Fletcher will lead the squad for the Burnley fixture as Manchester United assesses potential candidates for the permanent role, marking a critical phase as the club seeks to rebuild and reclaim its former glory.
