Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, has issued a stern warning to the kingmakers (Oyomesi) and others involved in selecting the new Alaafin of Oyo, cautioning against bribery or gratification and threatening legal action against offenders.
Speaking during the presentation of the staff of office and certificate to the 46th Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade, on Monday at the Government House in Ibadan, Governor Makinde emphasized the need for transparency and accountability in the selection process.
The event followed controversies, as five Oyomesi had declared Oba Owoade’s appointment null and void, claiming they had recommended Prince Luqman Gbadegesin to the state government. Despite their objections, Governor Makinde upheld the appointment, describing Oba Owoade as a leader committed to preserving the cultural and historical heritage of the Oyo Kingdom.
“I believe that Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade will lead with wisdom, integrity, and a commitment to the unity of the Oyo Kingdom,” Makinde stated.
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring a fair and just process, warning that any individual or chief found guilty of accepting bribes during the selection would face prosecution.
In his acceptance speech, Oba Owoade expressed gratitude to the people of Oyo and pledged to prioritize the development of the kingdom and the welfare of its residents.
