The Lagos State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, has revealed plans to expand the number of Government Technical Colleges across all 20 local government areas. This initiative is aimed at addressing the increasing youth population and reducing the number of out-of-school children.
Speaking at the 2024 Graduation Ceremony for Technical College Students on Tuesday, Alli-Balogun pointed out that the existing five technical colleges, located in Agidingbi (Ikeja), Adesoba (Amuwo-Odofin), Ikotun (Alimosho), Epe, and Ikorodu, were established over 40 years ago and are no longer sufficient to meet current demands. He emphasized the need to align the 6-3-3-4 education system with modern socio-economic, technological, and political developments.
Describing technical education as a cornerstone for national development, the Commissioner noted that it is central to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s T.H.E.M.E.S PLUS agenda, designed to create a prosperous and modern Lagos.
Addressing over 2,000 graduates, Alli-Balogun encouraged them to apply their skills to drive economic growth and make a positive impact in their communities. “As technical and vocational education graduates, you’ve gained the skills and knowledge necessary for success in your careers. I challenge you to dream big, aim higher, and strive for excellence in all your endeavors,” he urged.
The Commissioner also praised the Lagos State Technical and Vocational Education Board (LASTVEB) for its commitment to providing high-quality training, highlighting the board’s contribution to the excellent standards of graduates.
The expansion of technical colleges is expected to play a key role in combating youth unemployment and fostering economic development in Lagos State.
