Labour Party Crisis Worsens as Abure Faction Cites Supreme Court Backing

The Julius Abure-led National Working Committee (NWC) of the Labour Party (LP) has reasserted its leadership, citing the party’s constitution and a recent Supreme Court ruling as the legal basis for its mandate.

At a press conference in Abuja on Tuesday, Abure and National Secretary Alhaji Farouk Ibrahim pointed to the March 27, 2024 national convention in Nnewi, Anambra State, as a legitimate reaffirmation of their authority. They accused Abia State Governor Alex Otti and former Anambra Governor Peter Obi of deepening internal divisions by backing the recognition of Mrs. Nenadi Usman as National Chairman by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Reading a prepared statement, LP National Publicity Secretary Obiora Ifoh said:
“The Supreme Court judgment delivered on April 4 reaffirmed the party’s national convention and upheld the organs created by the party’s constitution—namely the National Working Committee (NWC), National Executive Council (NEC), and National Convention.”

He stressed that party disputes are internal and non-justiciable, urging that they be handled within the LP’s established structures. Ifoh warned against what he described as attempts to pressure INEC into withdrawing its recognition of the Abure-led NWC.

“The party’s constitution must be respected. The Supreme Court has spoken clearly—no individual, including Governor Otti or Peter Obi, should attempt to undermine the internal decisions of the party,” he declared.

The party urged members to respect the judicial verdict and unite under its constitutional leadership to maintain internal cohesion.
