Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State has been honored with the esteemed title of Sardaunan Ilorin by the Emir of Ilorin, Dr. Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, for his commitment to preserving and promoting the culture and traditions of the Ilorin Emirate.
This honor makes AbdulRazaq the second individual to hold the title, previously held by the late billionaire philanthropist Alhaji Umar Saro. The title “Sardauna” is also famously associated with Sir Ahmadu Bello, a significant figure in northern Nigerian politics known as the Sardauna of Sokoto.
At the brief conferral ceremony, the Emir commended Governor AbdulRazaq for his outstanding leadership and support for the Ilorin community, including his active participation in the traditional Durbar festival. The governor’s hands-on leadership style and dedication to public welfare have earned him multiple traditional titles across Kwara State, such as Soludero of Offa Kingdom, Sadaukin Lafiagi, Kauran Kaiama, and Akorede of Oro Kingdom.
The Emir highlighted AbdulRazaq’s influential role both in Kwara State and nationally, particularly as the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum. “Governor AbdulRazaq’s commitment to our traditions and active involvement in the annual Ilorin Grand Durbar make him deserving of this chieftaincy title,” stated the Emir. “He is well-regarded both at home and internationally, evidenced by his leadership role within the Nigeria Governors’ Forum.”
The Emir also praised AbdulRazaq for maintaining peace in Kwara State, amidst the broader security challenges facing Nigeria. In response, Governor AbdulRazaq expressed his gratitude, acknowledging the title as motivation to continue his work for the community’s advancement. “Being named Sardauna of Ilorin is a significant honor, reflecting the legacy of those who held the position before me. I am truly grateful and inspired to continue serving our communities,” AbdulRazaq remarked.
He further appreciated the Emir and other traditional leaders for their efforts in ensuring peace and stability in the state and supported the idea of giving traditional rulers constitutional roles to enhance governance.
Governor AbdulRazaq’s visit to the Emir’s Palace included prominent figures from his administration, such as the Majority Leader of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Hon. AbdulKadir Magaji, along with various cabinet members and senior officials.
