The Kano State Government has expressed strong opposition to the proposed tax reform bills currently under consideration by the National Assembly.
Speaking at the 2025 celebration held at Filin Mahaha, Kofar Naisa open theatre, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, represented by Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, criticized the tax reforms as detrimental to the welfare of Nigerians. A statement from the deputy governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Ibrahim Garba Shu’aibu, detailed the government’s stance.
“This tax reform bill is not the solution to our economic challenges. Kano State stands firmly against any policy that negatively affects the welfare of our people,” the governor said.
Governor Yusuf commended the resilience of Kano residents amid economic hardships and described the proposed tax hike as “ill-timed, lopsided, and inimical to the unity of the country.” He urged the federal government to prioritize tackling extreme poverty and hunger, particularly in the northern region, which continues to grapple with hyperinflation and insecurity.
The governor also highlighted the achievements of his administration, including advancements in healthcare, education, road construction, and foreign scholarship programs. He reminded citizens of the Supreme Court ruling in January 2024 that confirmed his electoral victory as governor.
The statement also touched on the reinstatement of Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II in 2024, which Gwarzo described as a triumph of the people’s will. The deputy governor reiterated that the authority to appoint an emir lies exclusively with the Kano State Governor and called on those interfering in the Kano Emirate’s affairs to respect the law and maintain peace.
Looking ahead, Gwarzo urged Kano residents to remain united and optimistic. “Let 2025 be a year of shared prosperity and progress. Together, we will build a stronger Kano,” he said.
