Kano Governor Nominates Murtala Sule Garo as Deputy Governor

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has nominated Alhaji Murtala Sule Garo as Deputy Governor following the resignation of Comrade Abdulsalam Gwarzo.

The nomination was conveyed to the State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation, according to a statement by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad.

The vacancy arose after the former deputy governor, Abdulsalam Gwarzo, resigned on March 27, 2026 and subsequently left the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) amid political disagreements with the governor. He was also reported to have moved to the All Progressives Congress (APC) after coming under impeachment pressure from the Assembly over alleged misconduct and financial infractions.

Garo, the nominee, is a seasoned political figure with over two decades of experience in elective and appointed roles. His career includes serving as Kabo Local Government Chairman, State Organising Secretary of his party, Special Adviser to the Kano State Government, Chairman of ALGON Kano, and Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs. He also contested as Deputy Governorship candidate in the 2023 general elections.

The statement noted that Garo is the son-in-law of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

Governor Yusuf said the nomination followed wide consultations with stakeholders and is in line with Section 191(3) of the 1999 Constitution, which empowers a governor to fill a deputy governor vacancy.

He added that the move is aimed at strengthening governance and ensuring continuity in service delivery in the state.
