The Senate on Tuesday approved the nomination of Justice Joseph Olubunmi Kayode Oyewole for appointment as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
The confirmation followed the consideration and adoption of a report by the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, which screened the nominee and recommended his approval. The report was presented by the committee’s chairman, Senator Adeniyi Ayodele Adegbonmire (APC, Ondo Central).
Adegbonmire told the chamber that Justice Oyewole was screened on Thursday, January 29, 2026, noting that he responded intelligently and accurately to all questions posed by the committee.
“The Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters has scrutinised the curriculum vitae and other relevant documents of the nominee,” he said.
“We therefore recommend that the Senate approve the confirmation of Honourable Justice Joseph Olubunmi Olukayode Oyewole, JCA, for appointment as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.”
The nomination was subsequently approved through a voice vote conducted by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
Congratulating Justice Oyewole, Akpabio prayed for divine wisdom to guide him in the discharge of his judicial responsibilities.
“I pray that God grants him the wisdom to do justice to all and sundry, irrespective of status,” the Senate President said.
“I also congratulate Mr. President for finding a square peg in a square hole, which made it possible for the Senate to unanimously endorse this nomination.”
Akpabio added that the appointment would strengthen the judiciary and ensure that justice is delivered fairly to all Nigerians, including public office holders.
