Construction giant Julius Berger has formally handed over the multi-billion naira Second Niger Bridge project to the Federal Government.
The Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, expressed satisfaction with the project during a brief ceremony at the toll area of the bridge.
Umahi confirmed that repairs on vandalized portions had been carried out by the contractor. He also announced that the bridge is open to concession for completion of ancillary roads, toll collection, and recouping investments by private companies. Modalities to ease traffic at both the old and new bridges during the festive period are underway.
The 1.6 kilometers long bridge serves as a crucial link between Anambra and Delta states.
Initially proposed during the 1978/79 political campaign by then-candidate Shehu Shagari of the National Party of Nigeria (NPN), the Second Niger Bridge is a significant infrastructure milestone.
