Joshua Recovers, Discharged from Hospital After Expressway Crash

British-Nigerian heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua has been discharged from Duchess International Hospital, Ikeja, following his involvement in a fatal road accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.

The accident, which occurred on Monday, December 29, 2025, claimed the lives of two young men identified as Lateef Ayodele and Gami Cina.

In a joint statement issued on Thursday, Lagos State Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotoso, and Special Adviser to the Ogun State Governor on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, confirmed that the former world heavyweight champion had been certified clinically fit and released from hospital.

“The governments of Lagos and Ogun states once again commiserate with the families of the two young men, Lateef Ayodele and Gami Cina, who tragically lost their lives in the road accident involving Anthony Joshua,” the statement said.

“We pray that the Almighty grants the repose of their souls and gives their families and loved ones the fortitude to bear this very sad and painful loss.”

According to the statement, Joshua and his mother visited a Lagos funeral home on Thursday to pay their final respects to the deceased, whose remains were being prepared for repatriation later that evening.

“Anthony Joshua was discharged from the hospital late this evening, having been deemed clinically fit to continue his recovery from home,” the officials said.

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, and Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, expressed gratitude to Nigerians for their concern, sympathy, and support following the incident. They also thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his “fatherly support” throughout the period.

The statement further commended the medical team at Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, and other healthcare professionals who attended to Joshua and other injured victims, praising their professionalism and quality of care.
