Jigawa State Confirms Meningitis Outbreak

The Jigawa State government has officially confirmed an outbreak of Cerebrospinal Meningitis (CSM) in six local government areas of the state.

Dr. Shehu Sambo, the state director of the Primary Healthcare Development Agency (PHC), made this announcement during the commencement of the 2024 Polio eradication campaign at the palace of the Emir of Dutse, Alhaji Muhammad Hamim Nuhu, on Saturday. Dr. Sambo stated, “An outbreak of Cerebrospinal Meningitis cases has been reported in several local government areas within our state.”

He further specified that these areas share direct borders with Niger Republic, namely: Babura, Birniwa, Malam Madori, Maigari, Kaugama, and Suletankarkar local government areas. Emphasizing the government’s swift response, Dr. Sambo assured that medical teams have already been dispatched to the affected areas to commence immunization efforts targeting the at-risk population. Additionally, he advised residents to take preventive measures such as sleeping in well-ventilated rooms and avoiding overcrowding to mitigate the spread of the disease.
