In a move to engage directly with the American public, New York Congressman Hakeem Jeffries and New Jersey Senator Cory Booker held a livestreamed sit-in and discussion on Sunday from the steps of the U.S. Capitol.
Titled “An Urgent Conversation with the American People,” the eight-hour livestream took place just ahead of Congress’ return to session on Monday.
In a joint statement, Jeffries and Booker warned of what they described as Republican leaders’ “reckless budget scheme,” which they say aims to slash funding for Medicaid, food assistance, and other critical safety net programs in favor of tax breaks for the wealthy. “Given what’s at stake, these could be some of the most consequential weeks for seniors, kids, and families in generations,” the statement read.
Throughout the sit-in, Jeffries and Booker discussed the nation’s shared values, religious and moral principles, and argued that the proposed budget plan stands in direct opposition to those ideals. They also emphasized the importance of public engagement, assuring viewers that their voices have the power to influence the national conversation at this pivotal moment.
The event featured appearances from other members of the U.S. House and Senate, who joined the discussion to highlight how the proposed cuts would impact their constituents. Groups of passersby also gathered on the Capitol steps, listening and at times joining the conversation.
The sit-in underscored growing Democratic opposition to the pending budget plan as lawmakers prepare for what promises to be a heated battle on Capitol Hill.
