Ireti Kingibe Retains ADC Membership After Court Ruling

A Federal High Court has refused a bid to bar Senator Ireti Kingibe from participating in the affairs of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The decision came on Thursday from Justice Peter Lifu, who dismissed an ex parte application filed by some ward leaders in Wuse, Federal Capital Territory, claiming the senator had been suspended for alleged anti-party activities. Instead of granting the injunction, the court directed the plaintiffs to formally notify Kingibe so she could respond to the allegations.

The plaintiffs, reportedly aligned with Nyesom Wike, had sought to prevent Kingibe from identifying as a party member or taking part in ADC activities.

Justice Lifu emphasised that fairness requires both parties to be heard, ruling that the senator must have the opportunity to defend herself. The matter was adjourned to April 20, 2026, for hearing, and the judge ordered that all court processes be served on Kingibe.

The suit, filed under FHC/ABJ/CV/539/2026 by Okezuo Anayo and Isaiah Samuel on behalf of other ward members, alleged Kingibe was suspended on March 10, 2026, for anti-party conduct, interference in ward administration, and holding parallel meetings.

Kingibe’s lawyer, Abubakar Marshall, informed the court that a preliminary objection challenging the suit had been filed, indicating a potential legal battle ahead.
