Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi is scheduled to participate in a joint phone call on Friday with his French, British, and German counterparts to address the stalled nuclear negotiations and the looming threat of renewed international sanctions, according to state news agency IRNA.
The three European nations — signatories of the 2015 nuclear accord — have warned that they may invoke the United Nations’ “snapback” sanctions mechanism if Tehran refuses to reengage in diplomatic talks over its nuclear program. The mechanism would reimpose sanctions that were previously lifted under the nuclear deal.
Western powers, including the United States, suspect Iran’s nuclear activities may be aimed at developing weapons capabilities. However, Tehran has repeatedly denied these claims, maintaining that its nuclear program is purely civilian in nature.
Supporting Iran’s position, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has assessed that Iran remains far from developing a nuclear weapon. In March, U.S. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard testified that American intelligence agencies had found no evidence of active weaponisation efforts by Iran.
Tensions escalated dramatically in June when joint U.S.-Israeli airstrikes targeted Iranian nuclear facilities. In response, Iran suspended negotiations with Washington and restricted IAEA inspectors’ access to several key sites. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi called the move “deeply concerning,” warning of reduced oversight of Iran’s nuclear program.
According to Iranian state media, the upcoming phone call will focus on the potential activation of the snapback sanctions and ways to salvage the diplomatic process. Additionally, a separate Iranian delegation is set to travel to Vienna on Friday for discussions with IAEA officials, although the agenda for those meetings remains undisclosed.
As diplomatic efforts resume, the outcome of these discussions could shape the next chapter in Iran’s tense standoff with the West over its nuclear ambitions.
