INEC Urge Journalists to Combat Fake News Ahead of Ondo Governorship Election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called on journalists to remain vigilant in curbing the spread of fake news as Ondo State prepares for next month’s governorship election. This appeal was made during a training session for media professionals, including reporters, producers, and on-air personalities.

Sam Olumekun, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, emphasized the dangers of misinformation, noting that it can fuel unnecessary tension and lead to violence. Speaking on his behalf, Ondo State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Babalola, urged journalists to verify all information related to the election process and INEC’s activities before reporting.

Olumekun acknowledged the crucial role journalists play in delivering accurate, credible information to the public. He encouraged the media to maintain objectivity, offer balanced coverage of political parties, and report election incidents responsibly to avoid escalating tensions. He also highlighted the importance of journalists being present at polling stations to promote transparency.

INEC’s Administrative Secretary, Mr. Biodun Amosun, added that the training was designed to equip journalists with a deeper understanding of election guidelines, including the use of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and result collation. He stressed that accurate reporting would prevent misinformation and ensure the public has a clear understanding of the electoral process.
