Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has dismissed rumours suggesting he plans to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to either the All Progressives Congress (APC) or the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday, Lawal reaffirmed his loyalty to the PDP, stating that he remains a committed, card-carrying member of the party.
“First of all, I’m glad that you said it’s a rumour that APC, ADC, and whatever political parties are calling on me to join their party. I made it clear that I am a PDP card-carrying member and I am still in PDP. I have no intention of going anywhere,” he said.
The governor also debunked claims that he might be considering defection to escape pressure from political adversaries in the state, insisting that he remains undeterred by their threats.
“I’m not afraid of anybody. They were there in 2023. I defeated them, and I will do it again in 2027,” he said, referencing former governors Sani Yerima and Bello Matawalle.
While acknowledging some internal disagreements within the PDP, Lawal said efforts were ongoing to resolve the issues, expressing confidence that the party would soon stabilize.
He also clarified his cordial relationship with President Bola Tinubu, stressing that it does not indicate any political alliance or endorsement.
When asked if he would support Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027, the governor replied:
“Let’s see how events will unfold. There is still time to 2027; we still have two years down the line. I don’t think politics should be the main issue right now. I think we should focus on governance.”
Lawal’s remarks come amid ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections and speculation over potential defections among key political figures.
