Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Olukayode Egbetokun has announced the identification of foreign sponsors behind the planned August 1, 2024 protests, intended to incite violence and cause widespread destruction.
While the IGP did not disclose the identities of these sponsors, he emphasized the need for stricter control measures.
In a press briefing in Abuja, the IGP stressed that leaders of groups planning to protest must register with the police command in their respective states. He acknowledged citizens’ right to peaceful protest but warned that non-compliance with guidelines would suggest ulterior motives. Protest organizers are required to provide details of intended venues, routes, and locations for proper coordination.
Anticipating protests by human rights activists and Nigerian youths over hunger and hardship, the Nigeria Police Force FCT command has deployed 4,200 personnel. FCT police spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, stated that this deployment aims to ensure public safety, protect peaceful protesters, and prevent protests from being hijacked by non-state actors.
Measures include visible policing, deployment of explosive ordinance device (EOD) experts, raids on identified black spots, and cooperation with other security agencies.
Commissioner of Police FCT, CP Benneth Igweh, urged residents to protest peacefully and warned against violent demonstrations and lawlessness. He assured that the police would prevent the destruction of public and private properties and the loss of lives.
