Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau has reaffirmed his absolute loyalty to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing him as his “political father” and pledging to obey the president’s directives without hesitation.
Speaking on Wednesday during a press briefing with National Assembly correspondents, Barau praised Tinubu’s leadership and support, especially during a turbulent political period in Kano State.
“I am ready to do anything Mr President tells me to do. He is my political father,” Barau said.
He credited Tinubu for standing by him in trying times, adding that the president’s success is a collective victory for the progressive political family.
“The President saved me when I was in murky political waters. His success is our collective success as progressives,” he noted.
Addressing the ongoing Constitution Review, Barau assured that the process would be transparent, inclusive, and people-driven. He revealed that over 59 bills and numerous memoranda from citizens and civil society groups had already been submitted for consideration.
To deepen public participation, Barau announced that zonal town hall meetings would be held simultaneously across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones on July 4 and 5, 2025.
“Not all Nigerians can travel to Abuja, so we are taking the process to them,” he explained.
“Everyone, regardless of class or profession, is welcome to participate.”
Issues on the agenda include state creation, governance reforms, and other constitutional matters. Barau emphasized that the Senate remains open to new suggestions from citizens.
He urged the media to create awareness and mobilize public engagement ahead of the hearings.
“The media plays a vital role in helping Nigerians understand this opportunity to shape the Constitution,” Barau stated.
He commended the Senate Committee on Constitution Review for the public engagement strategy and expressed optimism about the eventual outcome of the process.
