House of Reps to Probe Multichoice Over Frequent Subscription Hikes

The House of Representatives has launched an investigation into the frequent subscription price increases by Multichoice Nigeria, the operator of DSTV and GOTV.

During Wednesday’s plenary session, Esosa Iyawe, a federal lawmaker representing Oredo Federal Constituency, raised the motion under Matters of Urgent Public Importance. He called on the House Committee on Commerce to probe the recurring price hikes and recommend policies to ensure fair pricing for Nigerian subscribers.

Iyawe noted that Multichoice had announced a new round of price increases effective March 1, 2025—marking the second hike in less than a year, following the last increment in May 2024. Under the new pricing structure:

  • DSTV Premium will rise from ₦37,000 to ₦44,500
  • Compact+ will increase from ₦25,000 to ₦30,000
  • Compact bouquet will go up from ₦17,000 to ₦19,000

He argued that Multichoice’s market dominance means any price hike significantly affects Nigerians, many of whom are already struggling with economic hardship. He also pointed out that past increments had triggered public outcry, forcing some subscribers to abandon their decoders due to the lack of competition in the pay-TV sector.

The House subsequently directed its Committee on Commerce to investigate the situation and report back with recommendations within four weeks.
