Former Nigerian Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (retd.), has expressed deep concern about the country’s ongoing security challenges, warning that Nigeria cannot afford another civil disturbance like the 1967-1970 Civil War, which resulted in millions of deaths.
Speaking at the inaugural Plateau Unity Christmas Carols and Praise Festival in Jos, Plateau State, Gowon stressed the importance of national unity and divine intervention to resolve the current crises. He lamented the disturbances affecting the nation, stating, “This is something that God knows we should not be having after our Civil War.” Gowon also prayed that Nigeria would not face another period of crisis.
The former leader called on Nigerians to pray for peace and urged those responsible for inciting unrest to reflect on their actions and work towards national stability.
The festival, held at the Ten Commandments Prayer Altar in Du, Jos South Local Government Area, gathered notable figures, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, ex-governors Joshua Dariye and Jonah Jang, as well as dignitaries such as Ambassador Mary Lar, Professor Jerry Gana, retired military officers, and senior government officials. Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State joined in celebrating the event, which symbolized unity and thanksgiving during a challenging period for the nation.
